How the practice works

1

Remember

At the end of the day, sit down and think back. Write down what you appreciated about someone: a small kindness, a shared laugh, something they handled well. A prompt helps when nothing comes to mind.

2

Keep a gentle streak

A seven-day tracker encourages the daily habit of noticing. Streaks encourage; they never guilt.

3

Look back

See your week with each person, star the moments that mattered, and let an older moment resurface now and then.

What’s in the app

  • One journal for each person. Your partner, a parent, a child, a close friend. Switch between them with a tap.
  • Noticing prompts. Thirty gentle questions, like “What did they do today without being asked?”, so you never face a blank page.
  • A gentle streak. A seven-day tracker encourages the habit. Missing a day never comes with guilt.
  • Stars. Mark the moments that meant the most.
  • Your week with each person. How many moments you wrote, on how many days, and the ones you starred.
  • Look back. An older moment resurfaces on Today, so the good you noticed weeks ago is not forgotten.
  • Your full history, grouped by day. Tap any moment to edit it.
  • A reminder that learns your rhythm. Optional. It reminds you at the time you usually write, only when someone has no entry yet, and can keep names off your lock screen.
  • PIN lock with Face ID or Touch ID. Optional, for a journal that stays yours.
  • Made for iPad and Mac too. A two-column layout: write on one side, read your week on the other.

What an entry looks like

“I loved the way you smiled first thing this morning, before either of us had said a word.”

“I noticed how you put your phone face-down and listened to the whole story about my meeting.”

“I noticed you did the dishes I had promised to do, and never said a word about it.”

Example entries from a journal kept for a partner

Short, specific and written to the person. More examples in the guide for couples and the list of prompts.

Why one person at a time

Most gratitude journals ask what you are thankful for in general. Grateful to You asks a narrower question: what did you appreciate about this person today?

That focus has support in research on close relationships. In a daily diary study of couples, Algoe, Gable and Maisel (2010) found that everyday feelings of gratitude toward a partner predicted a stronger sense of connection and satisfaction the next day, for both partners. Keeping a journal for your partner, a parent, a child or a close friend turns that into a small nightly habit of noticing.

Frequently asked questions

What is Grateful to You?

Grateful to You is a free gratitude journal app for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Instead of one general journal, you keep a separate journal for each person you are grateful for, such as a partner, a parent, a child or a friend, and at the end of the day you write down what you appreciated about them.

How is it different from other gratitude journal apps?

Three things. It is about specific people rather than gratitude in general. It is built for a short reflection at the end of the day, with gentle prompts when you are not sure what to write. And it is private by design: no account, no ads, and your journal is never sent to us.

Is Grateful to You free?

Yes. Every journal, every moment, the prompts, streaks, your weekly recap, your full history, the daily reminder and the PIN lock are free and unlimited. There are no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and no ads.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 16.4 or later, and Mac computers with Apple silicon. On iPad and Mac the app uses a two-column layout. Each device keeps its own journal; journals do not sync between devices. There is no Android version.

Does it need an account or an internet connection?

No. There is nothing to sign up for, and your journal works fully offline. It is stored on your device, not on a server.

What if I do not know what to write?

The writing box shows a noticing prompt, such as “When did they make you smile today?”, with the person’s name filled in. Tap “Another prompt” to see a different one. You can browse all 30 on the prompts page.

Is there a daily reminder?

Yes, and it is off by default. When you turn it on, the app learns the time of day you usually write and reminds you then. It only reminds you when someone still has no entry for the day.

Where can I get it?

Grateful to You is available on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac, free.
