Privacy Policy
Effective
Privacy is the foundation of Grateful to You. The app is designed so that we could not read your journal even if we wanted to: there is no account, no server holding your entries, and no tracking. This policy explains, in plain language, what the app does with your data.
The short version
- Your journal, the people you write about and the moments you record, is stored on your device.
- Your journal is never sent to us. We cannot see it.
- There is no account and no sign-in. We cannot identify you.
- The app sends anonymous usage statistics (for example, that a moment was saved) with no journal content and no personal information.
- If you send feedback, we receive the message you write and a few technical details, described below.
Your journal stays on your device
Everything you write in Grateful to You, names, moments, stars and streaks, is stored in a local database in the app’s storage on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. The journal works fully offline. We operate no server that receives, stores or processes your journal.
Like other app data, your journal is included in the backups of your device that you make yourself, such as iCloud Backup or a backup to your computer. Those backups belong to your Apple Account or your computer; we have no access to them. Journals do not sync between devices.
Reminders
The optional daily reminder is a local notification, scheduled entirely on your device. No reminder data is sent anywhere. Reminders may mention the names of people you journal about; a setting lets you keep reminder wording generic instead.
PIN lock and Face ID
If you enable the optional PIN lock, your PIN is stored in the device Keychain, Apple’s secure storage. It is never included in usage statistics or in any network request. If you also turn on Face ID or Touch ID unlock, the check is performed by iOS on your device; the app only learns whether it succeeded and never receives biometric data.
Anonymous usage statistics
To understand which features are useful, the app sends anonymous usage signals, such as “a moment was saved” or “the daily reminder was turned on”, to TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service. Signals contain event names, counts and settings states. They never contain journal content, the names of people you write about, or anything that identifies you.
Each signal also carries technical context: the app version, the operating system version, the device model, your language and region setting, whether the app came from the App Store or a test build, a random identifier created when the app is installed, and a random identifier for the current session. The install identifier is random, is not linked to your name, email or Apple Account, and changes if you delete and reinstall the app. Usage statistics are never used for tracking or advertising.
Feedback you send us
If you use the in-app feedback form, the message you type, and an email address if you choose to give one, are sent to us so we can read and reply. The app also includes its version, the operating system version and the device model, so problems can be reproduced; never your journal. The message goes to our feedback service, which forwards it to our support inbox by email through our email provider. Sending feedback is entirely optional, and it is used only to answer you and improve the app.
Apple services
The app may occasionally ask whether you would like to rate it, using Apple’s standard rating prompt. Apple handles that prompt and any rating you leave; the app does not see your answer. Downloading the app from the App Store is governed by Apple’s own privacy policy.
What we never collect
- Your journal entries or the names of people you write about
- Your name, email address, contacts, location or any other personal information, unless you choose to include it in a feedback message
- Advertising identifiers; we never track you across apps or websites
Children
Grateful to You is not directed at children under 13 and, by design, collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If Grateful to You ever changes in a way that affects your privacy, for example a feature that processes data off your device, this policy will be updated first, and the change will be clearly disclosed in the app before anything is sent.
