Where is my journal stored?
On your device. There is no account, and we have no server that stores your journal. See the privacy policy for details.
Can I back up my journal or move it to a new device?
Your journal is part of the app’s data on your device, so it is included in your device backups (iCloud Backup, or a backup to your computer) if you use them. Restoring such a backup to a new device brings the journal with it. The app has no export and no sync of its own.
Does my journal sync between iPhone, iPad and Mac?
No. Each device keeps its own journal. If you use Grateful to You on more than one device, the journals are separate.
Is Grateful to You really free?
Yes. All of Grateful to You is free and unlimited. There are no subscriptions, no purchases and no ads.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 16.4 or later, and Mac computers with Apple silicon, from the App Store. On iPad and Mac the app uses a two-column layout: people and the writing box on one side, your week on the other. There is no Android version.
How do noticing prompts work?
When the writing box is empty, it shows a question about the person you are journaling for, such as “When did Sam make you smile today?”. The prompt changes each day and differs from person to person. Tap “Another prompt” to see a different one. There are 30 in total; you can read them all on the prompts page.
What are stars and “Your week with…”?
Tap the star next to a moment to mark it as one that meant a lot. Once you have written at least one moment for someone in the last seven days, a “Your week with…” card appears on Today. It shows how many moments you wrote, on how many days, your streak, your starred moments and the week’s moments.
Why does Today show an older moment?
That is Look back. Once a moment is at least three days old, it can resurface on Today, with a note such as “4 days ago”. It changes daily, so the good you noticed earlier is not forgotten.
How does the daily reminder work?
The reminder is off by default. When you turn it on, Grateful to You learns the time of day you usually write and schedules a local notification for that time, so there is no time picker. Until you have written on seven different days, it reminds you at 9:00 pm. It only reminds you when someone still has no entry that day, and a setting lets you keep the wording generic so no names appear in notifications.
How do I set up the PIN lock?
Open Settings, then Privacy, and turn on Lock with a PIN. Choose 4 to 8 digits. The PIN is stored in your device’s Keychain. Right after you set it, the app offers to unlock with Face ID or Touch ID as well; you can change that later under the same setting. Your PIN always works as a fallback.
What if I forget my PIN?
A forgotten PIN cannot be reset or recovered, by you or by us, because there is no account and we never receive your PIN. Please choose one you will remember.
Does Face ID send anything anywhere?
No. Face ID and Touch ID are handled by iOS on the device. Grateful to You only learns whether the check succeeded; it never sees or stores biometric data.
How do I stop journaling for someone?
Open Settings, tap the person, and choose “Stop journaling for” their name. Please note this is permanent: as a privacy measure, it removes their entire journal, every moment, from your device. The app asks you to confirm first.
Can I edit or remove a moment?
Yes. Tap a moment to edit it. To remove it, swipe it to the left on iPhone or iPad, or, with a mouse or trackpad, hover over it and click the ✕. A removed moment cannot be restored.
